I found out that someone was pretending to be me when I received a letter in the mail saying that I enrolled in a program through a well known home repair company. I won’t mention the real name of the store because I don’t feel comfortable, I already feel robbed from this whole thing. I called the number on the letter that I received and told them that I did not enroll in this and I asked them if this person took a store credit card out. The customer service agent told me that there was a credit card taken out in the store in my name, and they spent about $900. I talked to TransUnion, and an identity solutions team. I also tried to do a little investigating myself. I live in PA and the thief lives all the way in Arizona. I called the home store all the way in Arizona and a female employee said that there are two people by the same name as me in their computer and one is located in the same area in which the person applied for the store credit card. She almost gave me the address, but didn’t. I was so anxious to give it to the cops, but I have to wait until the paperwork goes through before they even attempt to investigate. This seems to be taking forever and I want the person caught as soon as possible! Does anyone have any ways I could find out who this person is so I can give it to the police?

I have had several people tell me that it is too risky to give out my personal information online especially for Auto Insurance Quotes. Two have had their identity stolen. Is this common?

Why isn’t it incumbant on Credit companies to verify with exact certainty who they are actually issuing credit to? Why is it not required in this day and age of high tech security to make damn sure when giving credit you know exactly who you are giving it to? This is an issue that affects millions directly and all of us indirectly.
No I have not been a victim of this crime yet, but by brother was. I now pay to protect my information.

For the past several years, I’ve only had debit card access to our accounts. I can use it to pick up a sandwich or to grab a couple items at the store, but any expense over $10 has to be cleared through hubby. My checks are direct deposited and I have no idea what happens from there.
I recently discovered hubby hasn’t been making the car payments on time, and is late on most of our bills. I never get to see any of the bills. Anyways I recently found a Wells Fargo card slip with my name on it, but *I* don’t have a Wells Fargo card….At one time he told me his brother had stolen our identies as well as tried to use our sons. I’m beginning to think it was him. I can’t pull a free credit report as it’s telling me I already did that. Any idea who to turn to at this point? I can’t afford a lawyer…
